Dear Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School Families,

The start of the new school year is fast approaching! As your new Principal, I am looking forward to meeting each member of your wonderful school community and continuing the great work started.

I am busily preparing to join Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School shortly after the start of the school year and looking forward to becoming an active member of New London’s close-knit community. The prospect of leading a school committed to discovering creative ways to enhance the learning process is an exciting one. I hope to share my experiences and learn from our staff as we inspire one another to explore innovative teaching styles and in turn, increase student achievement.

Prior to accepting this position, I served as an Assistant Principal at Mary McLeod Bethune, School 45, in Rochester, New York and supporting K-12 schools as Director of Professional Learning.  My passion for the relationship between teaching and learning is matched only by my love and appreciation for the arts. I worked for the 24th Street Experiment, a professional theater company, in San Antonio, Texas, and have extensive experience in theater, puppetry and coaching student story tellers. I am thrilled to bring my experience in these areas to the students of Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School. We will continue to “Scream Our Theme” this year.

I recognize that my main responsibility is to ensure that every student is provided with the highest quality of education possible in a safe and supportive learning environment. Working together as a team with students, parents, staff, and community members, I am committed to helping each student achieve their very best.

To ensure that all of your needs are met during the first few weeks of school, Scott Morgan, Dean of Students, will serve as acting principal. In addition, Jaye Wilson, a former New London Public Schools administrator, will join our school family for the month of September. I am confident that under Mr. Morgan’s leadership, he and Ms. Wilson will provide the highest level of support so that your family’s transition back to school is smooth. Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please know that they are here to help.

Please join us at the Welcome Festival on Tuesday, August 25.

5:00-6:15 p.m. – Kindergarten and first grade families/teachers

6:15-7:30 p.m. – Second through fifth grade families/teachers

I look forward to meeting those whom I will call friends, neighbors and colleagues!

Sincerely,
Carlos X. Leal
Principal
